The Butchers Hook & Cleaver
West
Smithfield Taking a
fresh approach, to providing a quality service in a traditional environment.
The Butchers Hook & Cleaver, formerly a branch
of The Midland Bank and a wholesale meat supply shop, is a relatively new establishment
being converted to a public house in 1999.
It is now an Award winning pub being the winner of
Fullers Best City Pub in the Griffin Trophy for 2005 and being awarded
environmental and safety awards from the Corporation of London, as well as awards for the floral displays at the pub from
the Worshipful company of Gardeners in the City of London.
The surrounding area of Smithfield is flourishing
with history. On one side we have the oldest and only functioning meat market
in the city of London. On the other we have the Norman church of St Bartholomew
the Great founded in 1123AD and St Bartholomew’s Hospital, one of the oldest
and most renowned teaching hospitals in the country.
There are many other historic sights and buildings
in the area as well as churches including sir Christopher Wren’s St Paul’s
Cathedral. Smithfield Gardens directly opposite the Butchers Hook is part of
the original Smethefelde or Smoothfield that from ancient times was used for
jousts, tournaments & executions including that of William Wallace the
Scottish Hero who on 23rd August 1305 was hung drawn and quartered.
